Moving to Indonesia from Australia

The same time as Perth, two to three hours behind Sydney. A one-year remote worker visa, with an income test.

What we found

The research, in short.

Research information, not advice. Sources last checked 16 October 2026.

Permission that fits your plans

Keep your job with a company outside Indonesia. Settle the length of stay first, because a visit permit does not let you work and the longer visa has an income test.

More detail

More than US$61,000 a year: Australians appear in the portal's tool for the E33G, the visa for employees of companies abroad who work remotely in Indonesia, with no guarantor. It asks for a bank account showing salary or income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year) and an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia. You also give a personal bank statement for the last three months with a balance that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100). The visa costs IDR 7,000,000 (about A$558 at Bank Indonesia's rates of 15 October 2026) and allows up to one year. The Embassy of Indonesia in Canberra's visa pages could not be opened, so these are the Immigration Directorate's figures, not a fee the embassy states in Australian dollars. The portal does not say whether a freelancer's client contracts count.

A visit of up to 60 days

Australians appear in the portal's tool as eligible for the B1 visa on arrival (IDR 500,000, about A$40, up to 30 days, extendable once for 30 more) and for the C1 tourist visa applied for online (IDR 1,000,000, up to 60 days), which asks for a three-month bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100). Smartraveller says that before you arrive by plane or boat you must complete the All Indonesia arrival card, within 72 hours of travel, and apply for an e-Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) on the same website; the portal also says to submit the card within three days.

More detail

Tourists pay Bali's IDR 150,000 levy (about A$12), which Smartraveller says is separate from the e-VOA. Both visas bar wages from people or companies in Indonesia, and Smartraveller says it is illegal to work, research or volunteer on a tourist visa, including posting online content for payment or commercial purposes, even if it is published after you leave. Immigration's list of purposes for changing a visit stay to a limited stay inside Indonesia does not include remote work, and in September 2026 it detained a visa on arrival holder in Canggu on suspicion of working as a DJ. Treat a longer working stay as needing the E33G.

A year: the remote worker visa (E33G)

The E33G allows up to one year, costs IDR 7,000,000 and must be used to enter Indonesia within 90 days of issue. It needs income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company outside Indonesia and a bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100).

More detail

You may not sell goods or services or be paid by individuals or companies in Indonesia. As an Australian you can also use the Work and Holiday visa (E35A): up to one year, IDR 7,000,000, with a guarantor, a letter of support from the immigration agency of the partner country, a university certificate and a three-month bank statement showing a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100); the page states no age limit, so ask. Longer routes exist but are tied to money in Indonesia: the Second Home visa (E33, up to five years, IDR 13,000,000) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$140,000) or a property that meets a minimum value (to be safe, aim for more than US$1,100,000); the Silver Hair visa (E33E, aged 55 or older, up to five years) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$51,000) and proof of income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month); and the Retirement visa (E33F, aged 55 or older, one year, IDR 7,000,000) asks for income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month) and a guarantor. The tool also lists spouse, child, parent and sibling visas for a remote worker's family, whose terms were not read, and Golden visa types, whose thresholds were not read.

Documents and timing

For the E33G: a passport valid for at least six months, a recent photograph, a curriculum vitae, a travel itinerary, a bank account that proves income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia, and a personal bank statement for the last three months with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100) showing your name, the period and the balance. The E35A adds a guarantee from a guarantor, a letter of support and a university certificate.

More detail

Smartraveller says to keep your passport valid for at least six months from the day you enter and leave, and in good condition: Indonesian authorities apply strict standards to damaged passports and travellers have been refused entry. The Embassy of Indonesia is at 8 Darwin Avenue, Yarralumla, Canberra; which of its offices serves your state was not found. You apply online and pay by card or the government payment system; the approved visa is emailed to you as a link. The visa must be used to enter within 90 days of issue, and the stay is up to one year. The portal gives no processing time for the E33G and no renewal terms on its page, so both are unknown. The limited stay permit also has a physical card at the immigration office. Complete the arrival card within 72 hours before you fly, and use only official sites with go.id in the address, because fake sites charge a fee.

Tax: Australia keeps its claim on you, and the agreement settles a dual one

Under the tax law, someone domiciled in Australia stays resident unless the Commissioner is satisfied their permanent place of abode is outside Australia, and someone in Australia for more than half the year is resident unless their usual place of abode is overseas and they do not intend to live here. The ATO says you are generally resident if you go overseas temporarily and do not set up a permanent home in another country; you then declare income from Australia and overseas, even if tax was withheld abroad.

More detail

If you stop being resident, assets other than taxable Australian property, such as many shares, are treated as sold at market value unless you choose to disregard this. The agreement between Australia and Indonesia was signed on 22 April 1992 and has been in force since 14 December 1992; Treasury lists it as modified by the Multilateral Instrument from 1 August 2020, and the ATO's synthesised text shows its residence, independent-services, employment, pensions and credit articles in their original wording. If both countries treat you as resident, you are treated as resident of the country where you have a permanent home, then where you have a habitual abode, then where your economic and personal relations are closer; a person taxed in a country only on income from sources there is not resident for the agreement. Pay for work done in Indonesia can be taxed there, unless all of these apply: you are in Indonesia no more than 120 days in any 12 months (shorter than Indonesia's 183-day residence test), your employer is not an Indonesian resident, the pay is not deducted in the profits of an Indonesian permanent establishment or fixed base, and the pay is taxed in Australia. Income from professional or other independent services is taxable only in Australia unless you have a fixed base regularly available in Indonesia or are there more than 120 days in any 12 months, in which case income from your activities there may also be taxed there. Australia allows a credit for Indonesian tax paid under the agreement, and pensions are taxable where you are resident, with the other country allowed to tax them at source up to 15%.

Tax: No social security agreement; super, loans and the Age Pension

Indonesia is not on Australia's list of 32 social security agreement countries, so no agreement links the two systems. Indonesia's public health insurance defines participants to include foreigners who work in Indonesia for at least six months; whether that reaches a remote worker with a foreign employer is unknown, and whether your Australian employer must keep paying super while you work from Indonesia was not checked, so ask the ATO.

More detail

As a citizen you cannot cash out super because you move: the ATO says citizens and permanent residents leaving Australia stay under the same super rules, so you can't access it until you reach preservation age and retire or meet another condition of release, and the departing Australia superannuation payment is for people who are not Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. If you have a HELP, VET Student Loan or Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan, you must still repay it: submit an overseas travel notification within 7 days of leaving if you intend to be away 183 days or more in any 12 months, and report your worldwide income each year (the deadline is 31 October). If you cancel private hospital cover while away, you may owe the Medicare levy surcharge if your income is above the threshold. If you get Age Pension, you move to an outside-Australia rate after 26 weeks, and the rate depends on how long you were an Australian resident between 16 and Age Pension age; with 10 years you would get 10/35ths of the usual rate in most cases. This is a mechanism, not your bill.

Setting up: Arrival forms and the Bali levy

Apply for the visa on the official eVisa portal. Smartraveller says to complete the All Indonesia arrival card online within 72 hours of travel and to use only official sites with go.id in the address.

More detail

Tourists entering Bali pay a levy of IDR 150,000 through the Love Bali site; Smartraveller says it is separate from the e-VOA. Holders of a KITAS or KITAP are exempt by showing the card; holders of other visas must apply for the exemption through the Love Bali system. Whether an E33G holder arriving on the visa pays the levy before the stay permit is issued is unknown. If you stay in a private residence, including a rental, Smartraveller says to register on arrival with the local Rukun Tetangga office and the local police.

Setting up: Health cover from day one

Services Australia says Medicare doesn't cover you while you're overseas, and Indonesia is not one of Australia's reciprocal healthcare agreement countries. Smartraveller says the standard of medical facilities is generally lower than in Australia and many regional hospitals only provide basic facilities.

More detail

The US Embassy's list names clinics and hospitals in Kuta, Nusa Dua, Denpasar and Ubud; it has no Canggu entry. Private insurance prices were not found, so that cost is unknown. If you cancel private hospital cover while you are away, you may owe the Medicare levy surcharge.

Setting up: A tax number, and your Australian paperwork

A foreign individual registers for an NPWP online with the Directorate General of Taxes, attaching a passport copy and a copy of a KITAS or KITAP, so the number usually follows the stay permit. The annual return is due three months after the end of the tax year, on 31 March.

More detail

On the Australian side, the ATO says a myGov account linked to the ATO lets you lodge your return, manage your super and update your contact details from overseas, so set it up before you leave.
