Moving to Indonesia from Canada

Roughly eleven to sixteen hours ahead of Canada. A one-year remote worker visa, with an income test.

What we found

The research, in short.

Research information, not advice. Sources last checked 16 October 2026.

Permission that fits your plans

Keep your job with a company outside Indonesia. Settle the length of stay first, because a visit permit does not let you work and the longer visa has an income test.

More detail

More than US$61,000 a year: The official eVisa portal lists the E33G visa for employees of companies abroad who work remotely in Indonesia, and its selection tool offers it to Canadian passports. It asks for a bank account showing salary or income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year) and an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia. You also give a personal bank statement for the last three months with a balance that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100). The portal states these in US dollars and gives no Canadian-dollar figure. The visa costs IDR 7,000,000 (about C$556 at Bank Indonesia's rates of 15 October 2026) and allows up to one year. The portal does not say whether a freelancer's client contracts count.

A visit of up to 60 days

Canada's government says that with a regular Canadian passport you may obtain a tourist visa in advance or on arrival at select points of entry, and that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry with a blank page. The portal's tool offers Canadian passports the B1 visa on arrival (IDR 500,000, up to 30 days, extendable once for 30 more) and the C1 tourist visa applied for online (IDR 1,000,000, up to 60 days), which asks for a three-month bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100); Canada is also on the portal's general-information list of passports eligible to apply online for a visitor visa, which that page describes as a single-entry visa for a 30-day stay, so check which stay length applies to you.

More detail

The Ngurah Rai immigration office lists an overstay fine of IDR 1,000,000 a day; Canada's government says Indonesia strictly enforces its rules, that foreign travellers have been detained for visa violations or overstays, and that a round-trip or onward ticket is required for all visa types. Every traveller must complete the All Indonesia arrival form before flying, and tourists pay Bali's IDR 150,000 levy. Both visas bar wages from people or companies in Indonesia. Whether working remotely for an employer abroad is allowed on a visit permit is not stated on the portal. Immigration's list of purposes for changing a visit stay to a limited stay inside Indonesia does not include remote work, and in September 2026 it detained a visa on arrival holder in Canggu on suspicion of working as a DJ. Treat a longer working stay as needing the E33G.

A year: the remote worker visa (E33G)

The E33G allows up to one year, costs IDR 7,000,000 and must be used to enter Indonesia within 90 days of issue. It needs income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company outside Indonesia and a bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100).

More detail

You may not sell goods or services or be paid by individuals or companies in Indonesia. The portal page states no nationality limit, and its selection tool offers the E33G to Canadian passports. Longer routes exist but are tied to money in Indonesia: the Second Home visa (E33, up to five years, IDR 13,000,000) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$140,000) or a property that meets a minimum value (to be safe, aim for more than US$1,100,000); the Silver Hair visa (E33E, aged 55 or older, up to five years) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$51,000) and proof of income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month); and the Retirement visa (E33F, aged 55 or older, one year, IDR 7,000,000) asks for income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month) and a guarantor. The portal also lists Golden visa types, whose thresholds were not read.

Documents and timing

For the E33G: a passport valid for at least six months (Canada's government also asks for a blank page), a recent photograph, a curriculum vitae, a travel itinerary, a bank account that proves income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia, and a personal bank statement for the last three months with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100) showing your name, the period and the balance. You apply online and pay by card or the government payment system; the approved visa is emailed to you as a link.

More detail

The visa must be used to enter within 90 days of issue, and the stay is up to one year. The portal gives no processing time for the E33G and no renewal terms on its page, so both are unknown. The limited stay permit also has a physical card at the immigration office. Complete the All Indonesia arrival form before you fly. The portal's support desk is visa@imigrasi.go.id; the Embassy of Indonesia in Ottawa's website could not be read, so what it asks or charges, and which post serves your province, is unknown.

Tax: The Canada–Indonesia agreement

The agreement was signed on 16 January 1979 and modified by a protocol of 1 April 1998 that entered into force on 31 December 1998; it is on Finance Canada's list of agreements in force. If both countries treat you as resident, Article 4 decides by a permanent home available to you, then the centre of vital interests, then habitual abode, then nationality, then agreement between the tax authorities.

More detail

Fees for independent professional services are taxable only in your country of residence unless you have a fixed base regularly available in the other country or are there for more than 120 days in any 12 months. Salary is taxable where the work is done, but only in your country of residence if you are in the other country no more than 120 days in any 12 months and either the pay for that work is no more than C$5,000 or your employer is not a resident of the other country and the pay is not borne by a fixed base or permanent establishment there. A year on the E33G is longer than 120 days, so ask an adviser whether Indonesia may tax pay for work you do there. Canada gives a credit for Indonesian tax paid on income arising in Indonesia. How Indonesia applies the agreement to the foreign pay of an E33G holder was not found.

Tax: Leaving Canada can trigger a deemed sale

If you cut your ties and become a non-resident, you are treated as having sold most property at fair market value on the day you leave. Canadian real estate, RRSPs, TFSAs and pensions are among the exceptions.

More detail

Form T1161 lists your property if it is worth more than $25,000, and Form T1244 lets you elect to defer the tax. Form NR73 asks the CRA for its opinion on your residency status before you go. If you stay a Canadian resident and own specified foreign property, including funds held outside Canada, costing more than $100,000 at any time in the year, you file Form T1135. This describes the mechanism, not your bill.

Tax: No social security agreement

Indonesia is not on the Government of Canada's list of countries with a social security agreement, so no agreement keeps you in the Canada Pension Plan while you work there or counts Indonesian periods toward Canadian benefits, and contributions in both systems are possible. An employer must deduct CPP for an employee working abroad who normally reports to its Canadian workplace, or who is a Canadian resident paid from it; otherwise the employer can extend cover with Form CPT8, or the employee can elect with Form CPT20.

More detail

We found no official page on CPP for freelancers living abroad, so confirm it with the Canada Revenue Agency. CPP benefits can be paid outside Canada; the Old Age Security pension abroad needs 20 years of residence in Canada after age 18, and payments may stop after more than 6 months outside Canada unless you qualify to receive them abroad. Indonesia's public health insurance defines participants to include foreigners who work in Indonesia for at least six months; whether that reaches a remote worker with a foreign employer is unknown.

Setting up: Arrival forms and the Bali levy

Apply for the visa on the official eVisa portal. Canada's government says the All Indonesia Declaration Form is mandatory: complete it before you check in for your flight, up to 72 hours before you arrive, and save the QR code it gives you; the portal says within three days.

More detail

Tourists entering Bali pay a levy of IDR 150,000 through the Love Bali site. Holders of a KITAS or KITAP are exempt by showing the card; holders of other visas must apply for the exemption through the Love Bali system. Whether an E33G holder arriving on the visa pays the levy before the stay permit is issued is unknown.

Setting up: Health cover from day one

Canada's government says health care in Indonesia is inadequate, most medical staff don't speak English or French, you may have to pay in advance in cash, and medical evacuation can be very expensive, so it advises insurance covering evacuation and hospital stays. Your provincial plan may not follow you: Ontario lets you keep OHIP for up to 2 years when you are away more than 7 months in 12 if Ontario stays your primary home and you spent at least 153 days there in each of the two 12-month periods before you leave, while British Columbia ends MSP at the end of the month you leave permanently; other provinces differ.

More detail

The US Embassy's list of clinics and hospitals names Kuta, Nusa Dua, Denpasar and Ubud; it has no Canggu entry. There is no Canadian government office in Bali: the embassy is in Jakarta, and the Consulate General of Australia in Denpasar helps Canadians under a sharing agreement. Private insurance prices were not found, so that cost is unknown.

Setting up: A tax number

A foreign individual registers for an NPWP online with the Directorate General of Taxes, attaching a passport copy and a copy of a KITAS or KITAP, so the number usually follows the stay permit. The annual return is due three months after the end of the tax year, on 31 March.
