Permission that fits your plans
Keep your job with a company outside Indonesia. Settle the length of stay first, because a visit permit does not let you work and the longer visa has an income test.

More than US$61,000 a year: The official eVisa portal lists the E33G visa for employees of companies abroad who work remotely in Indonesia, and its selection tool offers it to New Zealand passport holders. It asks for a bank account showing salary or income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year) and an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia. You also give a personal bank statement for the last three months with a balance that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100). The Indonesian Embassy in Wellington states no figure for this visa and cannot process applications on the portal, so these are the Directorate General of Immigration's figures, in US dollars. The portal states both figures in US dollars. The visa costs IDR 7,000,000 (about NZ$696) and allows up to one year. The portal does not say whether a freelancer's client contracts count.

A visit of up to 60 days
New Zealand is on Indonesia's visa on arrival list, and the portal's tool offers New Zealanders the B1 visa on arrival (IDR 500,000, up to 30 days, extendable once for 30 more) and the C1 tourist visa applied for online (IDR 1,000,000, up to 60 days), which asks for a three-month bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100). The Wellington embassy strongly recommends applying for the e-VoA online before you arrive; e-VoA holders can enter at airports including Ngurah Rai in Bali and Soekarno-Hatta in Jakarta.

The embassy itself issues only a single-entry visitor visa of up to 60 days, for NZ$105. It asks for a three-month bank statement showing a minimum balance per person (to be safe, hold more than NZ$4,600) (a higher minimum for a family; to be safe, hold more than NZ$5,100), return flights and proof of accommodation, takes paper applications by courier only, and processes them within 8 working days after payment. Every traveller must complete the arrival card, and tourists pay Bali's IDR 150,000 levy. Both visas bar wages from people or companies in Indonesia. Whether working remotely for an employer abroad is allowed on a visit permit is not stated on the portal. Immigration's list of purposes for changing a visit stay to a limited stay inside Indonesia does not include remote work, and in September 2026 it detained a visa on arrival holder in Canggu on suspicion of working as a DJ. SafeTravel says that since 28 May 2025 every extension of a stay permit needs an in-person visit to an immigration office, with photographs and fingerprints. Treat a longer working stay as needing the E33G.

A year: the remote worker visa (E33G)
The E33G allows up to one year, costs IDR 7,000,000 (about NZ$696) and must be used to enter Indonesia within 90 days of issue. It needs income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company outside Indonesia and a bank statement with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100).

You may not sell goods or services or be paid by individuals or companies in Indonesia. Longer routes exist but are tied to money in Indonesia: the Second Home visa (E33, up to five years, IDR 13,000,000) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$140,000) or a property that meets a minimum value (to be safe, aim for more than US$1,100,000); the Silver Hair visa (E33E, aged 55 or older, up to five years) asks for a deposit in a state-owned bank that meets a minimum (to be safe, hold more than US$51,000) and proof of income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month); and the Retirement visa (E33F, aged 55 or older, one year, IDR 7,000,000) asks for income that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$3,100 a month) and a guarantor. The portal also lists Golden visa types, whose thresholds were not read.

Documents and timing
For the E33G: a passport valid for at least six months, a recent photograph, a curriculum vitae, a travel itinerary, a bank account that proves income or salary that meets a minimum (to be safe, more than US$61,000 a year), an employment contract with a company established outside Indonesia, and a personal bank statement for the last three months with a minimum balance (to be safe, hold more than US$2,100) showing your name, the period and the balance. For the embassy's single-entry visitor visa: the signed application form (PERDIM 22), your original passport with at least six months' validity from arrival and three blank pages, a copy of the photo page, two photographs, flights in and out, proof of accommodation, the bank statement, and a prepaid courier envelope for the return.

A visitor needs an outbound ticket on arrival, and your passport must be valid for more than six months on the day you leave Indonesia. You apply online and pay by card or the government payment system; the approved visa is emailed to you as a link. The visa must be used to enter within 90 days of issue, and the stay is up to one year. The embassy says eVisa applications normally take 5 working days once complete and paid; the portal gives no processing time for the E33G and no renewal terms on its page, so those are unknown. Fees paid are not refundable. The limited stay permit also has a physical card at the immigration office. Complete the arrival card from three days before you fly.

Tax: New Zealand keeps its claim until you leave for good
You stop being a New Zealand tax resident only if you have no permanent place of abode in New Zealand and are away more than 325 days in any 12-month period. Until then, New Zealand taxes your worldwide income, including overseas salary and interest from overseas bank accounts, whether or not you bring the money home.

If your residency does change, update your details with your New Zealand bank or investment provider so the right non-resident withholding tax is deducted. The agreement says pensions for past employment are taxable only in the country where you are resident.

Tax: No social security agreement, and what happens to KiwiSaver, student loans and NZ Super
Indonesia is not on New Zealand's list of social security agreements, so no agreement links the two systems, and contributions in both are possible. Indonesia's public health insurance defines participants to include foreigners who work in Indonesia for at least six months; whether that reaches a remote worker with a foreign employer is unknown.
More detail
Government KiwiSaver contributions need you to live mainly in New Zealand; after a year living overseas (not in Australia) you can withdraw most of your savings, but not the government contributions. A student loan stops being interest-free if you become overseas-based, which happens when you are in New Zealand 31 days or fewer in a 184-day period. If you already get NZ Super and live overseas, you must apply to keep it, at least 6 weeks before you leave, at a rate based on the months you lived in New Zealand between ages 20 and 65. This is a mechanism, not your bill.

Setting up: Arrival forms, the Bali levy and registering your trip
Apply for the visa on the official eVisa portal, and complete the arrival card at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id from three days before you fly. Tourists entering Bali pay a levy of IDR 150,000 through the Love Bali site.
More detail
Holders of a KITAS or KITAP are exempt by showing the card; holders of other visas must apply for the exemption through the Love Bali system. Whether an E33G holder arriving on the visa pays the levy before the stay permit is issued is unknown. Register your travel plans on SafeTravel so the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade can send you updates; the nearest New Zealand office is the Embassy in Jakarta. SafeTravel adds that Indonesia does not recognise dual nationality over 18, which can limit consular help.

Setting up: Health cover from day one
New Zealand's reciprocal health agreements cover only Australia and the United Kingdom, so nothing covers you in Indonesia by default. SafeTravel says New Zealanders living in Indonesia should have comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation by air.

The US Embassy's list of clinics and hospitals (written for Americans) names facilities in Kuta, Nusa Dua, Denpasar and Ubud; it has no Canggu entry. Private insurance prices were not found, so that cost is unknown.

Setting up: A tax number
A foreign individual registers for an NPWP online with the Directorate General of Taxes, attaching a passport copy and a copy of a KITAS or KITAP, so the number usually follows the stay permit. The annual return is due three months after the end of the tax year, on 31 March.
